FLY-IN and BBQ 2008
LAA BRECKLAND STRUT FLY-IN and BBQ
NORFOLK GLIDING CLUB, TIBENHAM
SUNDAY 15 JUNE 2008
ARRIVALS:
Tibenham is a World War 2 standard-pattern, three-runway aerodrome, easily seen from the air, situated at 52° 27.5 N, 001° 09.5 E; 186 ft AMSL. It is 1 nm East of the Breckland Strut's home airstrip at Priory Farm; the two are completely separate.
See WWW. BrecklandStrut.co.uk for aerial photographs and a map of runway layout (Galleries: Fathers Day), plus real-time weather (a mile away from Tibenham). Similar details, and also actual weather, appear on WWW.norfolkglidingclub.com
Norwich Approach 119.350mHz; Lakenheath Approach (MATZ) 128.900 mHz
No landing slot is required. Gliders will be aerotowing throughout; there will be no winching. Rules of the Air apply regarding unpowered aircraft and aircraft under tow. Gliders may be circling upwind of the aerodrome and elsewhere.
Resident and visiting traffic will all use Tibenham 129.975 mHz, but note that not all gliders will have radio. An ADVISORY ground radio service will be provided.
Join downwind; no overhead joins.
Hard and Grass runways will be available in all directions, but will be regarded as a single runway for the purposes of approach. No parallel operations. Main runway 03/21 and its associated grass will be used, except when crosswind limits preclude.
Circuit R/W Length
Runway 03H Right 1,600 m
Runway 03G Right 500 m
Runway 08H Left 640 m
Runway 08G Left 430m
Runway 15H Right 1,270m (800 m after intersection)
Runway 15G Right 410 m
Runway 21H Left 1,600 m
Runway 21G Left 400 m
Runway 26H Right 650 m
Runway 26G Right 430 m
Runway 33H Left 1,270 m
Runway 33G Left 410 m
All visiting aircraft circuits at 1,000 feet, outside the aerodrome boundary. (Along the railway line for 03/21.) Beware occasional aircraft positioning movements at Priory Farm, immediately to the West.
ALL traffic will use the same circuit direction, but returning gliders and tugs circuit is 800 feet, inside the aerodrome boundary. Runways have threshold markings.
Hard runway edges are often uneven. Caution when changing surface. (Grass is available full length of 03/21, subject to this caution.) Grass on 08 final approach is level, but not normally in use due to dangerously uneven transition to concrete.
Strongly recommended that taxying is confined to concrete (out-of-use runways) until between the two cones marking the entrance to the grass parking area, opposite the clubhouse. This taxy route is via 100LL fuel pumps operated by the Gliding Club. Book in at the gazebo.
Helicopters: Follow the fixed-wing circuit and do not depart the runway until advised to do so by radio; then hover-taxi directly to the helicopter parking area well South of the clubhouse; do NOT hover-taxi over OR NEAR parked aircraft.
The fly-in is hosted by Breckland Strut; £5 landing fee is payable to Norfolk Gliding Club and includes use of Club facilities. Food, if desired, is extra.
DEPARTURES:
Book out at the gazebo and receive departure briefing. Use concrete surfaces.
Departures will be from Hard runways at corners of the central triangle, unless Grass or full extent of Hard is requested. Back-tracking for full-length Hard departure to be on the grass; radio call before entering the Hard.
Climb ahead until clear of the aerodrome boundary, except 33 departures, which should turn onto Northerly heading as soon as it is safe to do no.

THE SUMMER BECKONS
The final 'formal' meeting of the Winter season was held at NGC Tibenham on 2 April when Mark Birch of Norwich Airport air traffic control described the existing ATC arrangements and the changes planned to services in the months ahead — including a new type of Flight Information Service and the imposition of Class D airspace over the Airport and its surroundings.
We now look forward to our monthly Flying Evenings during the Summer months. As always, these are on the first Wednesday and held at Priory Farm. There is no formal agenda; just pitch up after work and go flying or—if you don't have an aircraft—put on an appealing look and wait for somebody to ask you to be 'ballast'. This is an ideal time for non-members to find out what Breckland Strut is all about. If the weather is too bad for aviation, come along, anyway, and just talk about it to like-minded enthusiasts.

Welcome to the LIGHT AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION
The Popular Flying Association became the Light Aircraft Associaion on 1 January 2008. There are no changes to our aim, which is to facilitate affordable flying for all.
On Sunday 15 June 2008 the Strut will hold its annul Fathers' Day Fly-In at Tibenham, the nearby gliding airfield. More on that story later....

November meeting: Wallis Autogyro Collection
Following the talk at the October meeting, Breckland Strut transferred en masse to Reymerston Hall on the evening of 7 November to view Wg Cdr Ken Wallis's workshops and his remarkable collection of 18 (eighteen!) autogyros. Ken commented, "Its like having a harem: They're all the same basic design, but they have some interesting individual characteristics."
Ken built them all himself, with final assembly in the house. Outbuildings contained some of the racing boats which Ken had also crafted, plus a diverse selection of engines of all types ranging from the minute to a pair of 18-cylinder, 2,850 hp Bristol Centaurus radials.

October meeting: Ken Wallis Packs 'Em In
The Winter season of meetings at Tibenham began in excellent fashion on 3 October with a packed room hearing an informative and entertaining a talk by Wing Commander Ken Wallis. A photograph appears in the Events gallery.
Attendance charges for non-members of the Strut, plus a donation from central funds, raised £200 for the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton, of which Wg Cdr Wallis is President.

SHARE A RIDE
The three most useless things in aviation are the runway behind you; the air in the fuel tank; and the empty seat in the cockpit.
Please share a ride with Strut members who do not have regular access to an aeroplane. Those listed below would be interested to hear of empty seats, but please be clear from the first contact whether or not you expect a contribution to expenses.

Fly Outs
After our first recent and most successful fly-out to Great Oakley, Rob Waller will be contacting members directly with details of others.
Please remember those Strutters who would welcome the opportunity of occupying a vacant seat. See notice above for names. Remember to say 'up front' whether you would appreciate a contribution to expenses.

EASTER SUNDAY FLY-OUT
The first of this year's Strut fly-outs was to the delightful grass aerodrome at Great Oakley, near Harwich, on Easter Sunday. A veritable Balbo of 13 Priory Farm-based and/or Breckland Strut aircraft descended on the airfield in near-prefect weather, their number including historic, microlight and flexwing types. Photos appear in the Miscellaneous and Events albums.

February Meeting
The meeting room at Tibenham was packed to capacity on 7 February 2007 to hear Flt Lt Charlie Brown discuss the flying characteristics of the Supermarine Spitfire in its various marks. Charlie has flown several versions of the aircraft and has also had the chance to pilot examples of its German adversaries. Proceedings were open to non-members, whose generosity swelled the contribution made by Breckland Strut to the RAF Association charity to £110. A photograph will be found in "Galleries", "Events".

Runway Conditions Status Board
When circumstances demand it, a runway surface conditions indicator board may be attached to the fence surrounding the Strut Hut and be visible on the webcam or via the Priory Farm weather station after clicking on "larger image" of the parking area thumbnail. See "Links" on this website for further information.
Three indications are possible:
1. "CLOSED" No flying allowed because of dangerous runway conditions or some other emergency. The board will NOT be used to indicate normal operating hours, which remain as published.
2. "R/W: V. WET" (Runway very wet). Flying permitted, but extreme care required due to long-term, partial waterlogging of the runway and parking area. The board will NOT be displayed to indicate a 'normal' slippery grass surface after average rainfall.
3. No board. The aerodrome owner (a) is on holiday; (b) is ill; or (c) has not yet got out of bed. Nothing else is implied, or should be inferred, from the absence of the board
